ABSTRACT

Introduction: Within the organizational culture, the university professor is a key agent for the achievement of learning, coordinating daily the requests of the subjects and majors, together with the students' needs. For this reason, teaching is one of the professions with the highest risk of experiencing stress, as well as anxiety and depression. In order to reduce these factors, programs have been created for teachers with various activities that promote self-care. Objective: To demonstrate the effectiveness of the Meditative Education Program of the Isha Judd System in reducing the levels of stress, depression and anxiety in teachers of the School of Health Sciences of the Universidad Autónoma de Chile. Methods: Ten face-to-face workshops were conducted by facilitators of the Isha Judd System. The participants were divided into three groups that met on Mondays, at different times (n = 22). The meetings were held every 15 days, each session was divided into six moments. In the first and last session, Beck's Depression and Anxiety Test, Rossemberg's Self-Esteem Scale, Perceived Stress Scale and the Isha Judd System wellbeing survey were applied. Results: The stress level of the group decreased by 7.2 points, going from moderate to low, the depression level decreased significantly, as did the anxiety values, reaching mild and minimal. The level of self-esteem was initially in the high range and at the end it remained in the same range, but the average score improved by 1.88 points. Conclusion: In those teachers who met the minimum requirements of the program, this methodology had a positive impact on their satisfaction, improving on average their levels of stress, anxiety, depression and self-esteem. This study has limitations due to the number and type of sample, so a second stage is suggested.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Pregnancy success rates with assisted reproductive technology (ART) have steadily improved. The effect of non-pharmacological interventions such as meditation as adjunctive therapies on the outcomes of ART cycles has been researched with promising results. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is much doubt about the effects of brief and extremely brief meditation on ART success rates. Therefore, an extremely brief facilitatorguided meditation and an audio-guided, self-paced short meditation were studied. Objectives: To investigate the effect of extremely brief meditation (EBMI) or brief mindfulness interventions (Brief MI) on pregnancy rate in women undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Method: This is a prospective three arms randomized, controlled study. Interventions were performed in the waiting period between embryo transfer and the ß-hCG pregnancy test. The sample size was calculated using Pearson's chi-square based on a power of 80%, effect size of 0.4 and a confidence level of 95%. Variables related to the success of ART included in the analysis consisted of age in years, number of embryos/blastocysts transferred, number of embryos/blastocysts with excellent or very good quality, number of in vitro fertilization cycles, age range, and whether the embryo was transferred or blastocyst. Chi-square test (χ2) and ANOVA compared variable values between intervention and control groups. Univariate Logistic Regression Analysis evaluated whether each variable related to ART success influenced or not the response of the outcome variable "pregnancy". Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis assessed if these variables could influence jointly the outcome of pregnancy. Results: A total of 68 women aged 37.5+4.3y were included (EBMI, n=24; Brief MI, n=22 and CG, n=22) were. Pearson's Chi-square test and Student's t test for independent samples showed that there were no significant differences (p<0.05) between the intervention groups and control group. Both EBMI and BMI had no significant effect on pregnancy rate in women undergoing ART. Conclusion: The use of brief or extremely brief meditation did not demonstrate significant differences in the pregnancy rate between the intervention and control groups in women undergoing treatment with Assisted Reproductive Techniques. The results of the effects of meditation on the pregnancy rate of women on ART are inconclusive in the literature. Larger sample randomized controlled trials comparing both brief and extremely brief meditation interventions to a control group are needed to confirm the findings of this study.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective The study investigated the effects of a short video app guided loving-kindness meditation (LKM) on college students' mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychological capital, and suicide ideation. The purpose of the study is to investigate the intervention effect of LKM training on suicidal ideation among college students with the help of the short video application and to provide an empirical basis for the exploration of early suicide intervention strategies for college students. Methods We recruited 80 college students from a university in China. The final 74 eligible participants were divided into two groups: app use group (n = 37) and the control group (n = 37). The app group accepted an 8-week app use interference, while the control group underwent no interference. We measured four major variable factors (mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychological capital, and suicide ideation) before and after the app use intervention. Results In the app group, self-compassion and positive psychological capital were significantly higher, and suicide ideation was significantly lower than the control group. In the control group, there were no noticeable differences in any of the four variables between the pre-test and post-test. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that the short video app guided LKM may help to improve self-compassion, and positive psychological capital, and reduce suicide ideation. The finding of the short video app-guided LKM's effect extends our understanding of the integrative effects of positive psychology and digital media on the reduction of suicide ideation.

ABSTRACT

The health conflict resolution paradigm represented by the judicial provision is in crisis and is unable to respond to the inherent disputes in a qualitative and quantitatively adequate way. However, the health conflict resolution paradigm represented by the judicial provision is in crisis and fails to respond to the inherent disputes in a qualitative and quantitatively adequate way. In view of this, this article aimed to respond to the question: Can health mediation be an adequate instrument of access to justice for the treatment of conflicts related to the right to public health in Brazil? It also analyzes some theoretical (and legal) aspects of the right to health as a human and fundamental right; and the contours of the crisis in the judicialization of the right to health, while it is relevant to the breaking of paradigms; to finally analyze whether health mediation can be an adequate tool for access to justice, with its respective implications. As methodological procedures, the following are used: the documentary research, of exploratory character, whose nature, from the point of view of the investigation of the problem, will be especially qualitative. As for the research techniques, of direct and indirect documentation, bibliographic and documental techniques are used. The research object has legal, social, and economic relevance, given that the crisis of social rights represents a crisis of human rights, directly affecting the dignity of human life. Health mediation proves to be an adequate tool for accessing justice related to legal-health conflicts, since it turns antagonisms into points of convergence and collaboration, preventing and treating disputes in a dialogical, consensual and democratic manner.

ABSTRACT

The aims of the current study were to evaluate the psychometric properties of a short version of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-SF-BR) and verify if the addition of wording mechanisms (positive or negative) contributes to the fit of the shortened Brazilian Portuguese version of the FFMQ. Four hundred eight participants answered self-report measurements. Structural equation modelling was employed for both objectives. Adequate model fit was found for the 5-factor FFMQ-SF-BR model, with significant improvements arising from the addition of wording mechanism effects. No evidences of differential item functioning and population heterogeneity were found. Bifactor analysis showed that latent traces are preferred overusing raw sum scores. The FFMQ-SF-BR is suitable to measure mindfulness in the Brazilian population and has the benefits of decreasing data collection length without losing content coverage. (AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Despite optimal medical treatment, many heart failure (HF) patients continue to show a high prevalence of symptoms, which contributes to a high morbidity and poor health-related quality of life (HRQL). Mindfulness meditation may be effective in improving the quality of life in these patients. Objective: A systematic review was conducted to evaluate if mindfulness meditation programs are effective in promoting and improving the quality of life in patients with heart failure. Methods: The PubMed (MEDLINE), Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), LILACS, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases were searched between October and November of 2019. Articles were selected if they evaluated mindfulness intervention, with an experimental or quasi-experimental design, in adults with heart failure and measured health-related quality of life. Results: This systematic review identified 108 studies through database searches. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of three studies were considered qualified. These studies took place in the Netherlands, the USA, and Brazil, and occurred between 2005 and 2015. Sample sizes varied from 19 to 215, and the average range of participants within each study varied from 43.2 to 75.4 years. Compared to control programs, mindfulness-based meditation programs improved the quality of life in two studies (p= 0.041 and p=0.03). Conclusion: Mindfulness-based meditation programs improved the quality of life in patients with HF. Therefore, there is limited data to strengthen this recommendation to this population, and future research is warranted in order to present consistency in the intervention protocols.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of mindful meditation and yoga on reducing burnout and stress in care workers who assist elderly individuals. Knowing how to reduce burnout is important because that of care workers is associated with the quality of client care, worker productivity, and job turnover.Patients and Methods: The participants included 44 care workers who worked for elderly care facilities in rural Fukuoka. They were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups: control, yoga, or mindfulness. In the yoga intervention group, a certified yoga instructor taught a 60-minute yoga session each week for six weeks. In the mindfulness group, an experienced medical doctor instructed a mindful meditation program for the same length. Participants were asked to complete the Japanese Burnout Scale (JBS), and the research team collected the level of α-amylase in saliva using NIPRO: T-110-N pre- and post-interventions.Results: MANOVA was performed with each intervention (control, yoga, mindfulness) as the independent variable on the three subscales of the JBS (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal achievement) and a biomarker of stress level (α-amylase). The results indicated a significant main effect of interventions, and a follow-up ANOVA showed a significant effect of interventions on emotional exhaustion and personal achievement. Conclusion: The results indicate that practicing mindful meditation or yoga for 60 minutes once a week for six weeks can reduce care workers’ burnout. This study was notable because the biomarker of stress also improved. It is strongly recommended and encouraged that institutions caring for the elderly population provide mindful meditation or yoga intervention to reduce burnout, which benefits not only care workers but also their clients.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This essay aims to present reflections on the benefits of Yoga to caregivers or health professionals, considering this practice as an effective strategy for coping with stressful situations that these people experience regularly, leading to better care of themselves and the others. To present this proposition, we will initially resort to some of the historical aspects of Yoga, to clarify its context of emergence, as well as its development in the world and in Brazil. Subsequently, we will reflect on the importance of taking care of oneself for the best care of the other and, finally, on the benefits of Yoga for caregivers, in dialogue with the scientific literature. We believe that the practice of Yoga, that contributes to the holistic development of the human being, can be a key method for health professionals to learn to know themselves better and to better deal with their difficulties, consequently improving the care that is offered to others. We suggest that the curricula of undergraduate healthcare courses in Brazil consider the inclusion of Yoga, so that these professionals can learn to use this strategy in their initial training, which would help in improving their quality of life and that of their patients.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction: The undergraduate medical course exposes students to a significant amount of stress, which can have negative consequences for learning, motivation and contact with patients. Lack of empathy in the doctor-patient relationship can hinder adherence and treatment results. Some techniques and practices of integrative medicine (mind and body) have been indicated as aiding the management and reduction of stress. These interventions that involve meditation practices, and which are already used in medical schools, can help in the development of empathy and in the vision of comprehensive care. Objective: Investigate the effect of the Stress Reduction and Empathy Development in Medicine Program (REDEMED©) on empathy levels in undergraduate medical students. Method: The program consisted of eight 2-hour sessions with practices involving meditation, yoga postures, and group activities aimed at improving interpersonal interactions. The intervention group consisted of 47 students and the control group 40 students. Empathy was evaluated before and after intervention using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy - version for medical students (JSE-S). Result: Empathy level significantly increased in the group who received intervention compared to the control group (p: 0.000). Conclusion: Participation in the REDEMED© program showed an increase in empathy in undergraduate medical students.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety is a subjective state of fear, apprehension, or tension in relation to something unknown or strange that can cause psychological and / or physical discomfort if it occurs in an exacerbated way and, according to the World Health Organization, that represents significant bad effects to the Brazilian population.
